Institute of Gas Turbine

The Institute of Gas Turbine (originally the Gas Turbine Teaching and Research Group) was established in 1956 by Professor Chung-Hua Wu, a renowned expert in gas turbines and a fellow of the Chinese Academy of Science as the first gas turbine group in Chinese universities. The Institute’s research focuses on Energy and Power System Engineering, Turbomachinery Aerodynamics, Combustion Science and Technology, Internal Heat and Mass Transfer, Gas Turbine Technology and Turbomachinery Control.

Over the years, the Institute has undertaken a large number of national key research projects funded by the National Climbing Project B, the National Program on Key Basic Research Projects (973 Program), the National High-Tech R&D Program (863 Program), the Key Projects for National Defense R&D Program, the National Natural Science Foundation as well as many research projects supported by industry. The Institute has established its position as an important research and education center in the field and has received many national and ministerial awards, with many of its research results being spun off into industrial applications.

The Institute maintains a strong partnership with other universities and companies from various countries including the United States, Japan, Great Britain, Germany, Canada, and Russia. As a result, many research centers have been established with foreign companies, the Tsinghua-BP Clean Energy Research and Education Center, Tsinghua-MHI joint R&D center and National Research Center of Gas Turbine & IGCC Technology, in recent years to further research and educational activities in these fields.

At present, the Institute has 16 faculties, with 7 professors, 3 associate professors, 2 senior engineers and 2 lecturer (including 2 Fellows of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and 1 member of the Hundred Elites Plan). Among them are nationally renowned experts in the field and young scholars who are quickly establishing themselves in the field with some of the faculty members recruited from abroad in recent years. These faculties are always striving to achieve excellence in their teaching and academic research.
