Institutes of Engineering Thermophysics

Institute of Engineering Thermo-physics (IET)

The Institute of Engineering Thermo-physics (originally known as the Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer Teaching and Research Group) was established in 1952 as a division of the Power Machinery Department. The internationally famous scientist and academician Prof. Bu-Xuan Wang was the founder and first director of the group from 1952 to 1984. In 1954, the Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer Laboratory was founded under the leadership of Prof. Bu-Xuan Wang. In 1981, the Engineering Thermo-physics discipline based on this Institute was granted authority to train doctoral and master's students as one of the first doctoral degree granting programs in China. In 1984, a post-doctoral research center was established in the Institute. In 1988 and 2007, the Engineering Thermo-physics discipline of Tsinghua University was selected as one of the important educational disciplines in China. In 1993 and 2001, the Engineering Thermo-physics discipline was ranked as the best in this discipline in China. The Institute teaches foundational courses in thermodynamics and heat transfer for 7 departments (29 classes) in the university every year. The “Engineering Thermodynamics” and “Heat Transfer” courses were named as “National Quality Courses”. The “Heat Transfer” course was also named as a “Beijing Quality Course”.

The Institute has several internationally known scholars leading an excellent research and educational program in the fields of heat transfer, engineering thermodynamics, refrigeration, energy efficiency and renewable energy. This Institute now has 16 faculty members including 7 professors (honorary titles: 1 Academician of the Chinese National Academy of Sciences; 1 member of the Ministry of Education Curriculum and Teaching Guidance Committee for Thermal Engineering; 1 Chang Jiang Scholar; 2 recipients of the National Fund for Outstanding Youth; 1 China Youth Science and Technology Award recipient; 2 members of the New Century "Hundred, Thousand and Ten Thousand Talents Project" in China; 1 winner of the National Excellent Ph.D. Dissertation Award; 1 Ministry of Education New Century Talent Award recipient), 4 associate professors, 1 assistant professor and 4 staff, including 1 senior engineer, 1 senior lab engineer and 2 senior lab technicians. In addition, The Institute has 2 post-doctoral candidates and 3 contract research faculty. In 2009, the faculty group was accepted into the “Development Program for Innovative Research Teams of the Ministry of Education”. In 2010, the faculty and staff were recognized as an “Excellent Teaching Team in Beijing”.

The Institute has a strong scientific research program and now has received many prestigious research awards. The key research objective of the Institute is fundamental technologies for the thermal sciences that lead international research frontiers and contribute to the national economic development and national defense needs. The institute investigates new thermophysical phenomena and develops new theories to describe phenomena in fields related to energy usage and the environment, refrigeration and cryogenic system, energy conservations and emissions reduction, and new technologies. The Institute main research aspects include Micro-Nano Scale Flow and Heat Transfer, Condensation and Boiling Heat Transfer, Fluid Flow and Heat Transfer in Porous Media, Thermophysical Properties of Fluids and Thermodynamic Analyses of Energy Systems, Heat Transfer and Thermal Control in Power Engineering and Aerospace Engineering Systems, Innovative Refrigeration and Energy Utilizations Systems, CO2 Storage and Utilization, and Thermophysical Property Measurement Techniques.

The Institute has undertaken national, provincial, ministerial, and international scientific research projects, including projects supported by the National Basic Research Program of China, National High Technology Research and Development Program of China, National Natural Science Foundation of China (General Programs, Key Programs and Major Programs), National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, Key Grant Projects of the Chinese Ministry of Education, National Key Scientific and Technological Projects, National Key Technologies R & D Program of China, Ph.D. Program Foundation of the Ministry of Education of China, Olympic Technology Research Projects, and International Cooperation Projects. Since 2000, our faculty has been awarded a National Technology Award for Invention (Second prize) and 7 Provincial and Ministerial Science and Technology Awards, has published many scientific research papers and has been awarded various patents.

The Institute has good experimental and computational facilities in a unique, leading engineering thermal physics research, teaching and training center. The Institute is also an important partner in the Key Laboratory for Thermal Science and Power Engineering of Ministry of Education, the Beijing Key Laboratory of CO2 Utilization and Reduction Technology, the Low Carbon Energy Laboratory of Tsinghua University, the Joint R & D Center of Tsinghua University-Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and the China Refrigeration Industry Association research program. The Institute provides an excellent research environment with extensive interactions with faculty from all over the world and significant international influence. The institute has organized very successful International Heat Transfer Conferences in 1985, 1988, 1992, 1996, 2000, 2004 and 2008 with many well-known scholars in attendance. Professor Bu-Xuan Wang has been the chairman of these conferences.
