Key Laboratory for Thermal Science and Power Engineering of Ministry of Education

The Key Laboratory for Thermal Science and Power Engineering of Ministry of Education established by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China is dedicated to the basic and applied research on efficient energy conversion technologies and clean utilization of coal. The laboratory focuses on heat transfer, thermodynamics, hydrodynamics, combustion and system science research to provide the scientific innovations and advanced technologies to enable secure and efficient utilization of energy, especially fossil fuels, in China.

The laboratory’s research directions include heat transfer and thermodynamics, combustion theory and technology, fluid dynamics and multiphase flow, key gas turbine technologies, clean energy conversion and energy conservation, pollution control theory and technology, and energy strategies.

The laboratory’s long-term goals are to provide a world-class team of experts in research and education for next generation researchers with key leaders so that the laboratory could produce innovative solutions for the world’s current energy needs. The laboratory will strive to become a world-class research institute with international influence and to contribute to the national economic development and national defense.

The laboratory has 74 full-time faculty members, of which 35 are professors, and 58 (more than 82% of the total) possess PhD degree. The faculty members include 2 Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 3 Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 2 National Outstanding Youth Awardees, and 1 Chinese Youth Science and Technology Awardees. The laboratory is led by five prestigious Academicians and each research area is led by 2 – 4 academic leaders. The laboratory has attracted a group of talented faculties who are devoted to energy and power related thermal physics research. The laboratory has also received faculties and postdoctoral candidates from other Chinese universities and institutes, and the leading universities in the US, Germany, Japan, and UK. The whole team is vigorous and productive in their research.

The laboratory has a complete series of analytical instruments and test rigs, with a total value of more than 70 million RMB. The laboratory’s facilities are among the best in China.
