The Center for Ecological Restoration and Carbon Fixation of Saline-Alkali Land was established on May 12, 2008, by the joint efforts of Thermal Engineering Department, Chemical Engineering Department, Environment Science and Engineering Department, and Hydraulic Engineering Department of Tsinghua University. Prof. NI, Weidou, the academician of China Academy of Engineering, has been elected as the director of the center. Since its establishment, the center has vigorously promoted the ecological restoration of saline-alkali soils in northern China. The research areas of the center cover both environment protection and energy utilization, with the focus on the mechanisms of saline-alkali soil reclamation by wet flue gas desulphurization (WFGD) byproduct, and the capability of carbon fixation by the recovered land. The research topics of the center include the effective cycle and mechanism of saline-alkali soil amelioration by WFGD byproduct, the impact of WFGD gypsum to soil environment and crops, the industrial and national standards of WFGD byproduct in agriculture, the water-salt interaction and water-saving mechanisms in saline-alkali soil after the application of WFGD byproduct, the mechanisms of carbon fixation by soil, the development of physical/ chemical /biological technologies to enhance the capability of soil carbon pool, and quantitative methods to evaluate the capability of soil carbon pool.
