Joint R&D Center of Hydraulic Turbine-Generator Unit of Tsinghua University （Department of Thermal Engineering）—Resource Hydro was founded in Jan, 2010, which is set up jointly by Tsinghua University and Hangzhou Resource Power Equipment Co. Ltd. R&D Center depends on Department of Thermal Engineering, Tsinghua University, and Prof. Wang Zhengwei is the center director. R&D team consists of over 20 researchers.

R&D Center develops basic research and application related to advanced new type of hydroelectric unit in high starting point, which depends on the latest research results of Tsinghua University in field of fluid machinery and engineering and advanced energy technology, and also relies on mature engineering and technical capacity and financial strength of Resource Power Equipment Co. ltd. in field of hydroelectric power generating equipment.

Hangzhou Resource Power Equipment Co. Ltd is a regional famous enterprise focusing on professional design, manufacture, marketing of hydroelectric generating equipment and supplying full set of hydroelectric generating equipment for hydropower station. The aim of cooperation with Department of Thermal Engineering, Tsinghua University is applying the latest design technique and performance optimization method to improve the structure and flow passage of existed hydroelectric unit in order to raise technical and industrial level of hydroelectric unit, developing domestic advanced new-type hydroelectric unit to extend the hydroelectric equipment variety of the company, forming scientific research achievements with independent intellectual property rights and striving to offer domestic advanced hydroelectric unit for hydropower industry.

R&D Center has carried out fruitful work in new-type hydraulic turbine flow passage development, generator ventilation calculation, temperature field and magnetic field analysis and so on since its establishment. By the end of 2012, R&D Center has finished 20 cooperative projects. The newly developed runner achieved one national patent for invention and four patents for utility models, in which the runner Y146 has been proved to reach domestic leading level by model test and applied in a real power station.
