Tsinghua University - Toshiba Energy and Environmental Research Center is an interdisciplinary research academic center established by Tsinghua University and Japan's Toshiba Corporation on April 14, 2008. The center is based on Department of Thermal Engineering. Department of Materials Science and Engineering, School of Environment and Department of Electrical Engineering participated jointly during the establishment.

Toshiba Corporation is a famous enterprise in the world and sustainable cooperated with Tsinghua on intelligent man-machine interface, wireless communication, digital TV, next generation optical disc and other fields before the center created. With the establishment of the Center, Tsinghua and Toshiba develop beginning comprehensive co-operation on energy and environmental area. Toshiba provided research funds for a series of cooperation projects. including energy saving and environmental protection, thermal power and hydropower as main energy and combine with new energy, application of energy-saving technology to carry out collaborative research involving computational fluid dynamics to improve turbine efficiency, advanced nitrogen oxide emission control, mini smart grid, bio-sensors to monitor water pollution, high-density heat storage materials, new CO2 capture chemical absorbent, hydro turbine sand erosion, heat and power plant energy management systems, energy-saving elevator group control, electric locomotive drives optimize cooling, electron beam irradiation sterilization water treatment, water treatment function power, electric locomotive inverter technology, building energy-saving technologies, Chinese information classification, electric vehicle battery technology, urban intelligent transportation, etc. Faculties and students more than 10 schools and departments participated in cooperative research projects, including Department of Thermal Engineering, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Department of Electrical Engineering, School of Environment, Institute of Nuclear and New Energy Technology, Department of Automation, Department of Architecture, Department of Computer Science and Technology, Department of Automotive Engineering, and Department of Civil Engineering.

Accompany with the deepening of bilateral cooperation in science and technology, Toshiba Corporation actively supports teaching and education of Tsinghua University. Vice president of Toshiba Corporation is invited as Guest Professor to Tsinghua University each year for academic lectures. In addition, Toshiba Corporation set up a Tsinghua-Toshiba Scholarship to encourage students to study diligently, and strive to make inventions and all-round progress. Tsinghua University and Toshiba also co-founded Tsinghua-Toshiba interest groups for future city with new energy, aimed at energy-saving environment-friendly design and construction of urban communities, and other areas of new energy utilization in extra-curricular students interested in learning, research, communication and practical platform, and team matches together for R&D funding, research equipment, instructor, practice and other educational and research resources.

The center shows the complementary advantage of enterprise and university. Starting Interdisciplinary collaborative research based on the center will speed up the transformation of R&D achievements and can effectively promote the researches and teaching in Tsinghua University
